Religious Studies

As partners in Catholic Education, we commit ourselves to providing quality Religious Education for our students through

·          making Jesus’ love of each individual, his example and values espoused in the Gospels known and understood among our community members.

·          enhancing our professional, technological and spiritual development.

·          promoting our Catholic Identity and Tradition and its expression in building a strong faith community.

·          addressing the diverse needs of our students and utilising new technologies to expand learning opportunities.

Mt St Patrick is a Catholic College based on Gospel values.  It aims to provide opportunities for education in faith by seeking to inspire and nourish the growth of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit, and to lead students to knowledge and understanding of the Catholic Faith.

To achieve this the Religious Education Department through its programmes will:

·                       ensure that all students are given a thorough knowledge of the Catholic heritage.

·                       offer students opportunities to participate in the liturgical life of the Church.

·                       organise programmes whereby students can participate in social justice action in the wider community.

·                      provide experiences for prayer and meditation in their home room and Religious Education classes.

·                      develop their understanding of the interconnectedness of all creation.

·                      promote a spirit of Ecumenism through the study of both Christian and other world religions.

·                      organise retreats that encourage students to reflect on the meaning of life and build better relationships with friends and God.

·                      foster closer College and Parish relationships.

·                      promote greater parental involvement in the religious formation of their children.

RATIONALE

Mt St Patrick College is more than an educational institution – it is a community of believers -a Catholic community in which its members actively give witness to their faith in God and promote Gospel Values in both words and deeds in the day to day life of the College.

For members of this faculty, we are committed to answering Jesus’ call for us to give witness to Him in our world bringing hope, love, happiness, selflessness, justice, peace and comfort to those in need – deeds not words.

.

Religious Education at our College is a process whereby students are assisted towards:

·          gaining access to and understanding of traditions of both our own College community and that of the wider Catholic community, their story, experience and the Church teachings

·          making sense of everyday life experiences in the broader contexts of mystery, complexity, confession and awe.

·          gaining access to and understanding of traditions of both our own College community and that of the wider Catholic community, their story, experience and the Church teachings

·          celebrating our traditions with others

·          responding to the activity of God in their lives and in the whole of creation

Religious Education holds a primal position in the curriculum of the College and gives to the College a witness of meaning and purpose. It is identifiable as the unifying element that permeates all that is striven for and accomplished within our College.

Mt St Patrick College provides a comprehensive Religious Education consisting of a number of interdependent elements which include:

·          the classroom Religious Education programme

·          the integration of Gospel values across the curriculum

·          the Liturgy and prayer life of the College

·          opportunities for retreats and reflection days

·          community service programs and aid for charities

The religious dimension of the College is expressed through all these above, in individual behaviour and in our interpersonal relationships. These provide faculty and staff members with the opportunity to promote our faith in Jesus Christ.
